Trishan Vassan

Hi Trishan, when did you arrive in the Netherlands?
I arrived on the 26th of April 2022, a day before King’s Day that year. It’s been almost 2 years already.

How did you experience the first few months in the Netherlands?
The first few months were quite busy. There were a lot of new things I had to adjust to, like learning the public transport system, living in a new country, and adapting to everything over here.

Does it feel like home?
It has taken some time, but the Netherlands does feel like my home now. I have a good routine, made some great friends, and get to experience new things all the time.

Do you still live in the same house as in the beginning?
Not anymore. When I first arrived, I stayed in an apartment in Barneveld Centrum. I had stayed there for over a year and have since moved to, and am currently living in, Rotterdam.

How was it to learn the language? Was it easier or harder than expected?
It was a bit trickier than I expected. Understanding the language and reading Dutch was quite easy to adapt to and understand, but speaking the language has been a bit of a longer learning curve for me. It is similar to Afrikaans but not entirely the same with regards to grammar and some pronunciations. Over time, I have made progress, which has made it easier for me to converse in the language.

What do you miss most about South Africa?
I would say I miss my family the most. Living in another country makes it more difficult to see each other in person, but having calls on a frequent basis helps a lot with this.

What appeals to you most in the Netherlands?
I would say the safety, stability of the country, opportunities for growth, and the ability to travel through Europe and experience so many different cultures and places that I would never be able to if I did not live in the Netherlands.
