Hi Jaco, when did you arrive in the Netherlands?
We arrived in the Netherlands end of October 2023 full of excitement!

How did you experience the first few months in the Netherlands?
The first few months in the Netherlands were intense but incredibly enriching. Everything was new… my work, the people, the culture and I was also learning a new language while exploring unfamiliar yet exciting places. Despite the pace, I truly enjoyed this season of change, especially the Dutch winter with its Christmas markets, lights, and festive events!

Does it feel like home?
In the beginning, it didn’t feel like home at all. However, as time passed, the Netherlands gradually became a place where we feel comfortable and settled. While there are many differences, the people we’ve met and the friendships we’ve formed have made it truly feel like home.

Do you still live in the same house as in the beginning?
Yes we do! summit developers helped in getting a great apartment in Barneveld Centrum. We didn’t have any reason to move yet. We are planning to buy a place next year.

How was it to learn the language? Was it easier or harder than expected?
Learning the language was harder than expected. Although I assumed Afrikaans would give me a strong advantage, Dutch still required a lot of effort. Being surrounded by Dutch at work helped significantly, as hearing the language every day made it easier to pick up and recognize words during lessons.

What do you miss most about South Africa?
Ouma beskuit (Haha joke). I really miss family and friends. Of course, the great weather and beautiful landscape as well!

What appeals to you most in the Netherlands?
The Netherlands appeals to me because of the stability and opportunities it offers, both personally and professionally. It’s a place where you can grow and thrive. Experiencing a winter Christmas has been especially meaningful, as it’s so different from South Africa. The people and the culture have also played a big role in making us feel welcome and at home.
