Henry Barker

Henry Barker arrived in the Netherlands in April 2024, together with his wife Yolanda and their sons Sean and Adrian. A new adventure!

Henry, why did you emigrate to the Netherlands?
As a family our main reason for moving to the Netherlands is the great culture and opportunity to live in and travel Europe whilst not having to adjust to a completely different culture. Netherlands also offers safety for my family as well as a great education and future prospects for my children.

Can you tell us something how you do like the Netherlands?
It is early days yet, but so far, we are really enjoying it here. My children absolutely love the school and have made many friends. It is almost surprising to see all the services working effectively here in contrast to South Africa. Schools function quite different from South African schooling in that work is done and tracked digitally, homework is minimal, and our children do not need to wear uniform.

Please tell us something about the projects you are currently working on.
I work with a great team developing communications software in a Microsoft environment. The Dutch working culture is different from the rat race I am used to, the environment is more relaxed and at the same time very productive. The people in the company and team are always happy to help, they very much see us as a team and not everyone for themselves.

Did the process of emigration go smoothly?
The emigration process is daunting for anyone, but we were very fortunate with a quick and smooth process, largely due to the help from summit developers. The paperwork done on the South African side admittedly is a bit painful, but we had started early which made a difference.

Can you explain to the South Africans who are considering to go overseas how you did experience the support from us?
I think that Ton, Matthijs and Paulien are truly passionate about what they do. They provided support in all aspects of the process, both with the process as well as with personal items and questions we had. I would say they went above what I would expect for example helping find a suitable school for our children, finding a home and arranging electricity, gas, water, Wi-Fi and even a sim card with data, not to mention delivering personal items to our home before the move to survive the first night. It made the entire process very simple for us as we had access to professional and personal advice, and most of the paperwork and processes was supported or arranged by summit developers.
