Dewan, why did you emigrate to the Netherlands?
For me, it was about expanding horizons and embracing new challenges. As a software developer, I saw an opportunity to grow professionally in Europe’s tech/business hub while experiencing a different culture and of course Europe. It wasn’t about leaving something behind, it was about adding new chapters to my story.

Can you tell us something how you do like the Netherlands?
Living here has been an adventure in contrasts. I’ve discovered that Dutch “gezelligheid” has the same warm feeling as a South African get-together, just with more bikes!! The Dutch way of communicating is refreshingly straightforward: no reading between the lines needed! Both countries have taught me different life lessons: South Africa showed me warmth and resilience, while the Netherlands teaches me efficiency and balance. It’s not about which is better, just beautifully different. Do I miss home? Of course! But I’ve learned you can carry your roots while growing new branches. The Netherlands has become my second home, adding to, not replacing, my South African identity.

Please tell us something about the projects you are currently working on.
My current projects include opportunities that allow me to bring my South African perspective to European challenges. It’s exciting to be that bridge between two worlds, bringing diverse thinking to the table.

Did the process of emigration go smoothly?
The emigration journey itself taught me patience and persistence. Having professional support made all the difference: turning what could have been an overwhelming process into a structured path.

Can you explain to the South Africans who are considering to go overseas how you did experience the support from us?
