Hi Chris, when did you arrive in the Netherlands?
I arrived in the Netherlands in October 2023.

How did you experience the first few months in the Netherlands?
The first few months were exciting but also challenging. It felt a bit like being on holiday in Europe and the winter was not as cold as expected. Everything was new, from the job to everyday life but it helped once we got into a new routine.

Does it feel like home?
The Netherlands will never replace South Africa, but it feels like a second home now.

How was it to learn the language? Was it easier or harder than expected?
It was harder than I expected. Even though Afrikaans and Dutch are similar, there are lots of differences too. The Dutch lessons helped a lot. Also speaking Dutch regularly, even if it wasn’t perfect helps build your confidence with the new language.

What do you miss most about South Africa?
I miss our family and friends. I also miss the mountains and the unique South African culture. At least there are South African shops here where you can buy some South African products.

What appeals to you most in the Netherlands?
Things here are very organized and efficient. I love the culture, the strong work-life balance, and the ease of traveling around Europe. Traveling was one of the reasons we moved here, and we have made some great memories already.
