Hi André, when did you arrive in the Netherlands?
In December 2021.

How did you experience the first few months in the Netherlands?
The first few months in the Netherlands were amazing, and still are amazing! I had an extremely soft landing as I was able to move in with my friends for the first few months. It was cold, but nothing to be scared of, the winters make you appreciate the summers a lot more!

Does it feel like home?
The Netherlands is now my home, and I can’t imagine moving back to South Africa. I have built a large friend group of internationals, and I also have a lot of friends from South Africa. When I travel to different countries for longer than a week, I start to miss home (The Netherlands).

Do you still live in the same house as in the beginning?
Yes!

How was it to learn the language? Was it easier or harder than expected?
Learning Dutch was far easier than I thought. I am Afrikaans, so that helped out a bunch! However, being Afrikaans also has its drawbacks, as it may feel natural to use older Afrikaans words. I have since continued my Dutch lessons to B2 and can have conversations without getting strange looks!

What do you miss most about South Africa?
Nothing except for close relatives.

What appeals to you most in the Netherlands?
When I arrived, the biggest appeal was the safety. Now, safety is a distant memory. What I appreciate now is the social aspects; everyone is out and about. The accessibility, in terms of public transport and biking lanes. The amazing cities and surroundings, and the opportunity to travel to places I never dreamed I would see. Also, from a festival standpoint, I have been to countless metal shows and festivals that I would have never dreamt I would be able to see.
