Hi AJ, when did you arrive in the Netherlands?
I arrived in the Netherlands in September 2023, so in just over a month it’ll have been two years.

How did you experience the first few months in the Netherlands?
The first few months were a mix of excitement, learning and adjusting. Since this wasn’t my first time moving abroad, I had a general idea of what to expect. Of course, each country has its own unique cultural characteristics, which influence how quickly and comfortably you settle in. Understanding and adapting to things like different communication styles, social norms and even new day-to-day routines was all part of the process.

Does it feel like home?
I’d say that after the first year, it started to feel like home. Whenever I’m out of the country, even when I’m in South Africa, the Netherlands now feels like my home base. It’s where I’ve built routines and settled into a rhythm that gives me a sense of stability. While South Africa will always be part of who I am, the Netherlands has become the place I return to, and to me, that’s what makes a place feel like home.

Do you still live in the same house as in the beginning?
During my first year I lived in Rotterdam but have since moved to Breda.

How was it to learn the language? Was it easier or harder than expected?
A bit of both. I’ve always had a keen interest in languages, so learning Dutch has actually become a hobby of mine. In the beginning, it was fairly easy to reach a level where I could hold basic conversations. However, developing a strong command of the language, enough to engage in complex discussions and clearly express emotions, requires patience and persistence. I’m taking the official Dutch B2 exam in October and plan to take the C1 exam early next year.

What do you miss most about South Africa?
I miss family and friends the most. Being from the Western Cape, I also sometimes find myself longing for the mountains I grew up around.

What appeals to you most in the Netherlands?
The opportunities it provides to grow both professionally and personally are what I value most. It’s a place where I can advance my career while enjoying a good work-life balance. Also, with the whole of Europe right at your doorstep, there is an almost endless number of ways in which to explore its rich history, art and architecture.
