Sean Liebenberg arrived in the Netherlands in March 2023, together with his wife Karen and their daughter Annabelle. Read more about the experiences of Sean.
Sean, why did you emigrate to the Netherlands?
Most importantly we wanted the best possible environment for our daughter to grow up in, and the Netherlands is a great choice due to the quality of life, their education system and health care. Moving to the Netherlands was also something my wife and I have been talking and dreaming about for quite some time. We enjoy traveling and experiencing new things, so when the opportunity presented itself (or more accurately – Ton presented it! ) we had to take the chance 🙂
Can you tell us something how you do like the Netherlands?
The quality of life is just so much better. Everything from the food, to the infrastructure that just always works. And we can walk or bike to the supermarket with our daughter, and we can safely stop along the way at any of the parks and playgrounds and play and relax. Although there are many more people here in the Netherlands, we actually have a much more peaceful life here.
Please tell us something about the projects you are currently working on.
I am lucky enough to be working in a great team that allows you to be yourself and explore your own ideas. We have quite a large code base which consists of many different technologies, so I am constantly learning new things. But, I also get to work with the latest tech stacks as I was immediately asked to contribute to their new project trying to incorporate true microservice architecture by breaking down the monolith into microservices.
Did the process of emigration go smoothly?
I could not believe how smoothly everything went from the initial interview with Ton and Mathijs, up until landing and settling in the Netherlands. Thanks to all the help from Ton and Matthijs and Paulien, we got all our paperwork sorted out in no time and before we knew it we were already settled in our new home. The language does pose some difficulty, but you have to be patient and keep at it. Afrikaans helps alot with your understanding, but you have to work really hard at speaking the language and expressing yourself efficiently.
Can you explain to the South Africans who are considering to go overseas how you did experience the support from us?
The service I got from everyone at summit developers was absolutely exceptional. Everything was explained in great detail and they were all always available when I had any questions. Everything that makes emigrating to another country difficult was handled by summit developers so we did not have to worry about anything. I can not thank everyone at summit developers enough! They arranged everything in a very short amount of time. They know how things work and what difficulties to expect, and therefore they just get things done.
